The constant evolution of the environment denotes a need for the
educational system to keep in tune with these changes. There is thus an
imperative need for Educators and Learners to adapt to these changes
namely the :
- Changing nature of
education
- Increasing demand
- Need for increasing
flexibility
- Increased
expectations

Changing nature of
education
The
amount of new knowledge generated in the last 30 years combined is
greater than that generated during past centuries. This rapid growth
results in the need for more people to keep up with the new technology.
People need to be retrained more frequently to receive more advanced
training in specific areas. The education and training facilities must
maintain in contact with current technology to adapt these changes. On
top of that, working and learning are no longer mutually exclusive
activities. New approaches, both Web-based and not, offer
characteristics that better facilitate these new changes.
Increasing
demand
Both the
education and training sectors are facing an increase in the number of
people needing and wanting to further and upgrade their education. One
of the driving forces behind this is the increasing rate of change in
the work environment and the increasing awareness that most workers
require some form of retraining.
Need for increasing
flexibility
Among
the increasing population of learners is a significant population of
mature learners who can only do part-time programmes while working and
supporting a family. These learners must therefore be able to study
wherever and whenever they require.
Increased expectations
For most learners today, education represents a considerable investment
in time and money. Like most consumers, learners are now demanding services
equivalent to the costs invested.
