Xmas celebration in Germany/Europe is significantly different from that in Asia. In northern China (my home town FuShun for example), people celebrate Xmas around 24 Dec. On Xmas eve, all the teenagers trot to the city center. They walk down the pedestrian zone, eating, drinking and playing with firecrackers. It is just like a mini-Chinese New Year for the young. In Singapore and Hongkong, the CBD is always dressed up with magnificent and resplendent decorations 1 month before Xmas. On and around Xmas eve, the central area is crammed with people and bustles with festival atmosphere. In Germany, however, the Xmas eve plays only the Silent Night! People stay at home with the family and no one venture into the street. Xmas Markets are normally put up only until mid-Dec. Afterwards it is complete silence (and you jolly store enough food before Xmas eve or else you have only the tap water to drink for a few days). While the Xmas decoration in most cities in Germany cannot match Singapore in terms of magnitude and grandeur, it conveys a different taste of originality, exquisiteness and elegance.

以前来欧洲都是春夏两季，这是第一次在欧洲过圣诞节。德国的圣诞节与亚洲的大相径庭，记得01年抚顺的圣诞夜，全市的年轻人都嗷嗷叫唤着簇拥到市中心的步行街，大家吃吃喝喝玩游戏，放鞭炮，点爆竹，时而整个烟花摊位被走火的鞭炮点燃，引起无数人围观喝彩，如同农历新年一般热闹非凡。新加坡和香港的圣诞庆祝可谓声势浩大，市中心到处是让人叹为观止的巨型圣诞装饰，圣诞夜乌节路被挤得水泄不通，节日气氛也被挤上了一个顶峰。在德国，圣诞夜是货真价实的平安夜，居民都跟家人呆在屋子里，整个街道一片沉寂。圣诞市场一般只开放到12月中，之后呼啦一下全撤了，商店也都关了，要是没有及时储备食物圣诞节就等着喝西北风吧。德国的圣诞装饰相比新加坡显得小家碧玉，规模不大，给人感觉非常简约，非常原汁原味，也更加大众化。

Weihnachten in Dortmund war eine Überraschung, die ich nie erwartet hätte. Früher habe ich immer gedacht, dass Weihnachten in Europa sehr lebendig und geschäftig ist. Das ist total falsch! Die Weihnachtsmärkte in Deutschland sind nur bis Mitte Dezember geöffnet. Danach bleiben alle Einheimischen mit ihren Familien zu Hause. Es gibt keinen Massenandrang in der Stadtmitte wie Singapur und Hongkong. Man kann allein auf der dunklen Straße stehen und “Stille Nacht“ singen.
Bitte vergessen Sie nicht: Kaufen Sie immer genug vor Weihnachten ein, wenn Sie nur Leitungswasser zum Frühstück haben, weil die Supermärkte an Weinachten ein paar Tage geschlossen sind.
Jedenfalls sind die Weihnachtsmärkte hier sehr schön. Der Schmuck ist nicht so groß und ehrfurchtgebietend wie in Singapur, aber er sieht ziemlich originell und elegant aus.
